Serving Others

JESUS CHRIST – the LORD of lords, and KING of kings – came to the earth, not in riches but in penury. He came to serve and not to be served. He came to give and not to receive. We see this in the Gospel accounts where JESUS laid down His life to save ours.

While our service to others, thankfully, does not require us to die a painful death on a cross, it does require that we live a life that is “worthy of our calling” (Ephesians 4:1). We, as Christians, have been given different gifts (I Corinthians 7:7b, Romans 12:6-8), but we are all called to serve.

The apostle Peter tells us this in I Peter 4:10, “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering GOD’s grace in its various forms.” What a blessing! This means that, as GOD’s elect, believers are chosen to “administer GOD’s grace” to others. This is a privileged position. In essence, it is a privilege to serve, so we should do it “heartily” as we are doing it unto The LORD (Colossians 3:23).

There are many benefits to service. JESUS teaches us in St. Matthew 25:35-46 about the importance of service among his people versus those who will be condemned. In verse 40, He said “‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”

So, what is our ultimate objective in serving GOD and others? … To gain the honored title of “Servant.” St. Matthew 25:21 records the Father’s Words that every Blood-washed believer wants to hear: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your Master’s happiness!” (NIV).
